Nafsika Papageorgiou

Post-doc Associate

Nafsika has been involved in 10 research projects (5 national and 5 EU funded ones) all focusing on biodiversity and ecosystem function communities. Her research field is marine ecology and more specifically she is interested in the dynamics of coastal ecosystems, the sediment biogeochemistry through the nutrient flux between sediment and water column, and the response of the benthic communities to the increased availability of nutrients in order to asses the role of human impacts on marine biodiversity. Her Ph.D. (Marine Biology, University of Crete, 2009) focused on diversity and ecosystem function of benthic communities. Results of her work have been published in 8 international peer reviewed journals, as well as in 6- conference presentations and posters.

Ioanna Kalantzi

PhD Student

Ioanna's thesis studies the impact of fish farming on the sediment heavy metal concentrations and the implications for the wild/cultured fish and the benthic organisms

Panagiotis Dimitriou

PhD Student

Panagiotis is working in his master thesis wich is a meta-analysis of benthic data in order to develop new indicators for the assessment of ecological quality

Irini Tsikopoulou

Msc Student

Irini graduated from the Department of Biology of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and her bachelor thesis concerned the distribution of benthic fauna in Thermaikos gulf. Results of her work have been published in 3 conference presentations and posters. Her interests concentrate on the marine ecology, sediment biogeochemistry and ecosystem functioning. Specifically, she is now working on her master thesis which investigates the impact of different types of stress (organic enrichment, hypoxia etc.) in the sediment in the light of biogeochemistry.
